About Us

The Althea Gibson Community Education and Tennis Center is a nonprofit tax-exempt organization that provides after school and summer camp programs for youth ages 8 to 14.  Located in North Central Philadelphia, Pennsylvania the Center is celebrating its 5th anniversary in 2008.

Our mission is building strong minds and bodies through educational, arts and sports programs such as:  health /nutrition, graphic arts design, scrabble, gardnering, leadership development, chess, homework help and special projects and initiatives.  Although the sports aspect is quite possibly the main attraction for our youth, it is the educational component that will maintain them and provide long-term advancement opportunities.

History

Founded by Ms. Bronal Z. Harris, the Althea Gibson Community Education and Tennis Center is located in North Central Philadelphia, PA at 10th Street and Girard Avenue.  The year around facility is built on one-acre of land and was completed in June 2003. The 21,080-sq. ft. Center, boasts two indoor tennis courts, three lighted outdoor courts, a secured parking lot, garden and 3,800-sq. ft. of space dedicated to educational programs.  The Center is named after the legendary African American tennis player Althea Gibson.  Miss Gibson won both the Wimbledon and U. S. National Singles in 1957 and 1958.  Miss Gibson, a person with remarkable spirit, determination and skill, serves as our inspiration and an example of how one can overcome unbelievable odds to achieve local, national and international acclaim and success.
